Malaysia

"Just a short break for us this time - only one week - in tropical Malaysia; the perfect setting to get over the jet lag and reaquaint with Asia. Ten weeks in the UK may have been quite refreshing, but....

We spent three days on the island of Langkawi, sipping tropical fruit juices, watching the waves break against the shore, and dodging the tropical down-pours (will we ever get the weather right?)

Alex was quite a hit with the locals - "Ooh, I do like your shirt. Where did you get it from?" asked the waiter in the nearby restaurant....

And then on to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital city and home of the Petronas twin towers - one of the tallest buildings in the world...

KL is not quite like Singapore, and it is not quite like Jakarta - it is a mixture of them both. This means that whilst you can still find Marks & Spencer and plenty of western food (Planet Hollywood, we love you), the city hasn't been over-sanitised, and everything is really cheap. And everyone is so friendly!!

Top tip - if you are planning a holiday to Asia - choose Malaysia instead of Thailand. It is much cheaper and not quite as over-run with backpackers trying to discover 'the real Asia'.

If holidays are not on the agenda, rent 'Entrapment' - worth it to hear Catherine Zeta Jones say 'Kuala Lumpur' (says Alex)."
